The next step – Customization

Recently we had an opportunity to listen to two great thinkers expert in their own domain. Let me describe what is coming up there in next 5-10 years from now.

Brian Levy, CTO, HP

He was emphasizing about mass customization. What is it?

Previous technology had been developed in view of fitting to all. There was no personalization about the technology. No demograhy, age brackets were considered for making the products. The most of the users have no choice.

The present technological changes have proved that this cannot sustain for long time because human needs are different. The device world is transforming to personal world. Now most of the people wants to be connected anytime and anywhere to their family, work and community. The present era tells us that “connectivity is everything”

There are four places in which the breakthrough is expected

- My Persona
- My Entertainment
- My Community
- My Communication

These are the four dimensions of the diamond. The individual is interwoven across this dimensions.

The basic gist of the presentation is to connect human rather than devices.

He also highlighted the trust paradigm which represents the center of trust is different for different geographies. Those are network service providers within those geographies in whom people trust for the future services and connectivity.

David J Farber, The GodFather of IP Network

His perspective was toward the future of telecommunication industry, current research challenges and opportunities and the business.

He speaks in typical professor language so sometimes difficult to follow, but he really shared a good ideas with us.

The current IP network cannot support gigabit speed network, so there is a need to develop a completely new kind of protocol or enhanced the existing one. In doing so, there are many things down the line have to be changed.

He is looking forward to photonic networks in the future.

He also talked a little bit about “Snow Crash” authored by Neal Stephenson. The book is really interesting and one should read it.

And he talked a lot about federal laws for bandwidth allocation and current scenario for the same as there is a sale of 700 MHz radio.

The world so close together

Bucheon City, South Korea

The plan to visit AIINS World was made instantly on Friday. We decided to start on Saturday about 12:00 pm by friend’s car. We were all five people. Everything was according to the plan, but still there was some delay unforeseen. So I thought to call one of friends family to join together with us. Now we were 8 people together with two cars. After having a delicious lunch ( Kheer included ;) )at friend’s home, we started exactly 1.00 pm from Suwon.

AIINS World is located in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. It was almost 70 km drive. The journey was tiring because the stupid GPS Navigator found the way through all the cities on the way. We reached there around 4:00 pm. The ticket was 8.5k won per person. We got into the place and wow what we see there all the masterpieces of the World together.
Here we go ….

Basilica of the Sacred Heard (Paris, France)
Cathedral of Chartres (Chartres, France)
Cathedral of Notre-Dame (Paris, France)
Palace of Versailles (Versailles, France)
Fountrainbleau (Southeast of Paris, France)
Schloss Belvedere (Vienna, Austria)
Tower of Pisa (Italy)

Milan Cathedral (Italy)
Neuschwanstein (Bayern, Germany)
Deir el-bahari Temple of Hatshepsut(Deir el-bahari, Egypt)
The Capitol (Washington DC, USA)
White House (Washington DC, USA)
Taj Mahal – The symbol of love (India)
Empire State Building, WTC, Grand Cenctral Station, Petronas Tower all together

The place was good. The detail look requires 2-3 hrs. There was a acrobat show for 30 minites. The jokers are very funny. There is a 3D theater where you can watch ‘Dinky’ – The story of a dinasaur for 15 minutes in 4k won. Have fun….

When is a switch statement better than multiple if statements?

I read this question in some website today. A lot of people have tried to give the following answers

- if more than two condition expression for the same variable
- code readability
- complexity of code increases if there are more conditions used
- systematic and easy code to understand
- straight forward condition (no less than or greater than condition)

I was a bit satisfied with those answers. After some thoughts, I realized that I have used the following code in some cases which can facilitate the answer convincingly

There are some situations where we have many conditions based on the same variable and some require special processing and the rest as the same as of others. For example..

switch(variable)
{

case val1:

do something for val1;

break;
case val2:

do something for val2;

case val3:
do something for val3;
break;
default:
break;
}

Here we require to ‘do something for val2′ and we can reuse the ‘do something of val3′ code. We intentionally falling through the next switch because we feel that we can reuse that code. By doing so we can remove the redundant code.

I found one more interesting thing about how switch and if statements are converted to the assembly language.

switch statement performs all condition check in the beginning and jumps to the corresponding point and execute the bunch of processing statements.

if statement performs the check; on condition satisfied, execute the related processing statements. and go to the next statement after all if-else. If the condition is not satisfied, it jumps to the next condition check.

After analyzing the above disassembly code, it is better to use switch as it reduces the jump and redundant code.

Seven Springs [Salad and Grill Restaurant]

We had a gathering today in Seven Springs as it has been quite a long time for such an event and one of our choir member was leaving so kind of send-off too. The restaurant is easily accessible from Seoul City Hall. It comes on subway line number 1 and 2. It is located in the basement of 736 building.

It’s a typical salad bar kind of restaurant having many branches in different parts of Seoul. It offers good number of vegetables, fresh and dry fruits, roasted garlic, pasta and much more in Salad. One can also have chicken, sea food, clam chowder, broccoli soup as appetizer. My choices are clam chowder, pasta, black and green olive, vegetable leaves, chicken leg pieces, shrimps and vegetable rolls. Wow … The salad was exuberant to stop ourselves. We were having a lot.

Our instructor realized about that and she came to us and told that there is a main dish on the way. Therefore, we applied some break for salad and waiting for it. In a little while, we got a big dish and my gosh..! It’s grilled red meat. It’s difficult to restrain my appetizer after seeing such a lavish red meat. I had it in good quantity.

After finishing the main course, we turned ourselves to deserts. It was also in a good number of varieties starting from yogurt to yummie cake and ice cream. I had some kiwis, oranges, yogurts, cake and cherries.

Over all, the experience was good. The restaurant provides good ambiance for relish dining even for those who are veggies. Quite good choices. The food costs around 20k won per person. I feel it’s reasonable for the unlimited choices and food available here.

Eastern beauty of Korea

Last Friday, we (with my friend) were just discussing where to spend this weekend. It’s Autumn time here. The beauty of Autumn can be most enjoyed near to the mountains where the trees and bushes change their color from green to red, yellow, orange or so many other bright shades. There are many mountains on the Eastern coast of South Korea. Thus, we decided “Let’s go to East”.

We thought we would start at 7:30 am Saturday to avoid the traffic and frustration as well. We (my friend, his wife and their little kid) somehow made it to start at 9:00 am as it was holiday mood. The “Avante” started cruising on National highway 42 (E) going to Ichon. As we expected, the traffic was heavy on 42 and we spent more than 2 hours just to finish 60-70 km.

After Ichon, the drive was smooth. My aficionado friend was enjoying the driving. We crossed Wonju. By this time, it was already 1.00 pm. We were hungry, but we were not finding good restaurant. After Wonju, the nature has already changed the colors and the mountains were passing by. We lost our hunger due to nature.

We continued to Pyeongchang and it was already 3:00 pm. In Pyeongchang, We found a Chinese restaurant. You know what I found JajangBap over there. It was already been more than a year when I last time had it in Oakland, CA. There was not much time to think for the menu, we ordered JajangBap(Rice with Jajang sauce) and BokkamBap(Fried rice). We decided to reach Samcheok by 5:00 pm and we started. The road was passing by and through so many mountains. I was totally mesmerized by the nature. There were so many tunnels on the way.

At one point NH 42 ended and we continued on NH 7 going to our destination. We reached around 5:30pm. As we were passing by a main road, we show the hoarding of Samcheok Beach, we immediately turned that side and what? Within a 500 m, we saw the sea roaring and we were just staring to the sea as it was sudden, and after such a long 7 hrs journey. We were over joyed. The feeling was super.

We stayed in the hotel on this beach and that is even sea facing room. We went into the city and searching for good restaurants. After a more than 1 hr of search, we zeroed into a restaurant where we found fried chicken. We stuffed ourselves and went back to hotel and slept.

The next day morning was awesome. When I got up, I saw the Sun coming out behind the sea. It was refreshing moment. By the time I came out from hotel to see after the bathe, the Sun was already above the sea. I had a nice morning walk on this beautiful beach.

The return journey was more also much exciting and adventurous.
